Product Description

Smaller, yet stronger, than Snowbee's previous net release, this magnetic net release has a split ring on each side that can be easily attached to waistcoat D-loops and landing nets.

The magnetic net release comes with an elasticated lanyard for extra security so that if it ever does release by mistake, or you fumble a bit while trying to reach it, your net won't disappear off never to be seen again.

How strong a magnetic retainer do I need?

Magnetic retainers come in a variety of strengths from around 1kg to 5Kg but how strong do they need to be and how do I choose the best strength for me?

The answer is not difficult to work out but depends on what weight of accessory or landing net you want it hold, what level of movement it has to be able to withstand and what level of security you want.

We ran some simple experiments using some peak hold weighing scales to see what load would be applied to a magnetic net retainer depending on the level of activity being undertaken. These are our results, where the mutiplier is how much you might need to multiply the weight of the item to ensure the magnet doesn't release when you don't want it to.

Standing Still: 1.00x
Fly Casting: 1.25x
Walking at a moderate pace: 1.3x
Gently shaking in the hand: 1.5x
Climbing a steep step (such as heaving up a bank, etc): 2.0x
Jumping down 1 step (as if from a stile, etc): 2.5x
Jumping down 2 steps (as if from a low wall, fallen tree etc): 3.0x
Running (at a jog): 3.5x

Ideally, we don't want the magnet releasing by mistake, or at least not too often, so a minimum of 2-2.5x the weight of the net makes sense.

On the other hand, unless you're planning on jumping up and down on the spot or regularly jogging then something like 4x the weight the magnet is retaining is the maximum you're going to need.

A good simple compromise, that will give some security and peace of mind is maybe just to say 3-4x the weight of the landing net should be sufficient for most cases.

And going for too strong a magnet isn't necessarily going to be better as it will require more of a tug to get the magnet to release the net when you need it. A 1Kg tug will feel like the item is quite secure, a 5Kg tug is really quite hefty and a 3Kg tug is somewhere in the middle but still quite strong. This is assuming the tug required is the strength of the magnet less the weight of the landing net.

So, to put this all into practice, with some example numbers:

1Kg Magnetic net retainer: Good for lightweight trout hand nets up to around 250-350g
2Kg Magnetic net retainer: Good for trout nets up to around 500-650g
3Kg Magnetic net retainer: Good for most landing nets up to around 750-1,000g
4Kg Magnetic net retainer: Good for heavy landing nets up to around 1.0-1.3Kg and extra secure
5Kg Magnetic net retainer: Good for most salmon landing nets up to around 1.25-1.7Kg and extra secure

If you prefer a bit of extra security and reducing the chance of an unwanted release then you can simply go for the next strength of magnet or two in the above chart.

I hope this helps, if you have any feedback or comments then do let us know.
