The Cortland Fairplay Fly Fishing Outfit is a complete fly fishing kit with rod, reel, backing line and fly line and the pack includes helpful advice on setting up and tips on casting.

The 4 piece fly rod is nicely balanced and is nice to use and casts smoothly. It has a cork handle, a screw down reel seat, a lined stripping guide and snake intermediate rings.

The lightweight, large arbor, composite fly reel comes complete with backing line and a high visibility orange floating weight forward fly line that makes it easy to see gentle takes.

The box contains helpful tips, including diagrams and instructions, on setting up and casting with a fly rod.

Simply add a leader and some flies and you're ready to fish.

This is the 8'6 #5/6 version which is perfect for fly fishing rivers and small lakes, ideal for targeting trout and grayling with the fly.

Our Opinion:

I tested one of these Fairplay outfits for a couple of hours at Syon Park one time and was surpised at how good it was. The rod cast smoothly and the line had no right to be as good as it was at this price. It was soft and supple with no coiling or memory.

Yes, the rod didn't have the casting power of some of my more expensive rods but as a first fly fishing setup for river or small stillwater use it was surprisingly good.

And I did catch a couple of nice trout with it when no one else was catching so I can definitely say there's no reason you won't be able to catch trout with this budget set up from Cortland.
